Online Schools - Designed Around the Busy Professional

One of the best ideas that has come out of the last few decades to help busy professionals get the education they need for advancement is online education. Whether a simple skill review or a brand new degree is needed for your current job, an online education may help you get there. Unfortunately, with every great idea like this comes a new wave of predators that are willing to hurt those who are trying to better themselves.

These predators run scam online schools with professional looking web sites that assure you of state certification or of accreditation through various agencies. These agencies are also usually scams. They will gladly take your money, and, in return, you will get a "degree" that is completely worthless. The entire process causes you to waste your time and money on a program that will not actually help you.

If you are worried about these scam sites and want to protect yourself from non-accredited online schools, you need to pay close attention to the school where you intend to register. Do they want proof of your past units and degrees, or are they willing to take you with no more background than a credit card? Do they provide you with a real address for the school, or are you only given the address for a suite or post office box? If you are worried about the quality of the school or if you think your money pays for a diploma rather than for units of classes, consider the fact that you might be looking at a diploma mill site.

If you want to be sure that you are not about to be scammed by a diploma mill, you should make a note of the accrediting agency. Check the United States Department of Education's web site (can you put a link to this here?) to see which accrediting agencies are actually valid. You can also check out the school itself to see if there are any claims against them posted on the Better Business Bureau (ditto here) web site.

Online schools are a great way for students all over the country to get the degrees that will help them improve their lives in a number of ways. It is important to remain skeptical, though, when faced with grand claims by online schools. A real online education requires hard work and study if you want the reward of a diploma. Check your school carefully before enrolling.
